Why are so many recruiting tech companies being acquired?

Three forces are behind most of the deals in this list. First, the large HR suites want AI recruiting features fast, and buying a startup that already has customers is quicker than building. Second, a wave of recruiting startups funded in 2021 and 2022 now need a buyer or more money, and money is harder to raise unless the product is AI first. Third, private equity owners keep rolling smaller tools into bigger platforms so they can sell one bundle.

The result is a market where the tool you buy today may belong to someone else next year. That is not always bad. A small tool backed by a large owner can get better support and deeper integrations. But it often means price changes at renewal, a forced move to the owner’s platform, or a product that stops getting new features.

What happens to customers when a recruiting tool is acquired?

It depends on why the buyer wanted it. When a suite buys a product to fill a gap, the product usually keeps running under its own name for a year or more, then becomes a module of the suite. When a buyer only wanted the team or the technology, the product is often closed within months and customers are offered a move to the buyer’s own tool.

How do you protect yourself if your recruiting software changes hands?

Keep your data portable. Make sure you can export candidates, notes and activity history in a usable format, and test the export once a year rather than when you need it. Read the change of control and price increase clauses in your contract before you sign, not after the press release.

Watch for early signs. A product that stops shipping updates, a sudden push to annual contracts, or a quiet change to the support team are all common before a sale or a shutdown. Payroll and employer of record deals are driven more by private equity roll ups. When a tool in this list is removed from our directory, its old listing redirects to the buyer or to its category, so existing links keep working.

We review every tool in the Work Insiders directory against vendor announcements, and we follow press releases and trade coverage of recruiting and HR technology. An entry goes on the list only with a link to the announcement or a trade report. Deals between staffing agencies are left out, because this list covers software. Announced deals are marked as such until they close.
