We read 53 answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Bing Copilot to 13 recruiting software questions. Apollo was named first in every email finder answer it was allowed into. LinkedIn Recruiter was named first in all seven passive sourcing answers. Instantly showed up in all ten cold email answers and led seven. Bullhorn led every engine when we asked for staffing firm ATS platforms, but only one of seven when we asked about a small agency. AI recruiting tools had no consensus at all. Claude, asked separately, agreed with the leaders in four of five categories but answered from memory, without searching the web.
Answers collected between September 14 and October 5, 2026 by ZeroRank, which asks each AI engine the same question as a US user and stores the full reply. AI answers change from week to week. Treat this as a snapshot, not a ranking.
Which recruiting tools do AI assistants recommend most?
Four categories have a clear AI favourite. One does not.
Every count below comes from the full text of each answer. For each one we recorded every product named, the order it was named in, and which product, if any, the engine called its top pick. Where a question asked for alternatives to a product, that product was left out of the count for that answer, so “Best Apollo alternatives” cannot count against or for Apollo.
| Category | Answers read | Named first most often | Named in the most answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Staffing agency ATS and CRM | 15 | Bullhorn and Crelate (9 each) | |
| Candidate sourcing | 10 | ||
| Email finders and contact data | 12 | ||
| Cold email | 10 | Instantly and Apollo (10 each) | |
| AI recruiting tools and agents | 6 | No leader (5 different tools) |
The answers named 86 different products in total, about six or seven per answer. Together the engines cited 160 different source sites.
What ATS do AI assistants recommend for a staffing agency?
It depends on how you ask. That is the single biggest finding in this whole set.
Asked for the “top ATS platforms for staffing firms”, all five engines named Bullhorn first. ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, AI Overviews and Copilot agreed without exception. JobDiva, Ceipal, Avionté and Loxo filled out most of the lists behind it.
Asked for the “best recruiting software for a small staffing agency”, Bullhorn led only once in seven answers. Recruit CRM led three times, Zoho Recruit twice, and Gemini opened with two tools almost nobody else named.
| Engine | “Top ATS for staffing firms” | “Best software for a small staffing agency” |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Bullhorn | Bullhorn (Sept), Recruit CRM (Oct) |
| Google AI Overviews | Bullhorn | Zoho Recruit (Sept), Recruit CRM (Oct) |
| Google AI Mode | Bullhorn | Recruit CRM |
| Gemini | Bullhorn | Reccopilot |
| Bing Copilot | Bullhorn | Zoho Recruit |
The pattern makes sense once you see it. “Staffing firm” reads as large and established, and Bullhorn is the default system for big staffing companies. “Small agency” pulls the engines toward cheaper, faster tools with published prices.
Bullhorn still appeared in 9 of the 12 agency answers where it was allowed, and five answers called it the top pick outright. No other agency tool was a top pick more than once.
Which agency tools get named but never lead?
Manatal and Ceipal each appeared in seven or eight answers across all five engines and were never named first. Loxo made seven answers and four top threes without leading once. Crelate tied Bullhorn on mentions but led only one answer, a ChatGPT list of Bullhorn alternatives.
For a vendor, being on the list is half the battle. Being first is a different battle, and these engines mostly hand it to the biggest name for the exact phrase the buyer typed. Our ATS market census has the full agency field with prices.
Which candidate sourcing tools do AI assistants recommend?
Sourcing produced the most consistent answers in the study.
For “top recruiting platforms for sourcing passive candidates”, LinkedIn Recruiter was named first in all seven answers, from every engine. SeekOut appeared in all ten sourcing answers and sat in the top three every single time. hireEZ also made all ten.
| Tool | Answers naming it (of 10) | In top three | Named first |
|---|---|---|---|
| SeekOut | 10 | 10 | 2 |
| hireEZ | 10 | 9 | 0 |
| 9 | 3 | 0 | |
| 8 | 0 | 0 | |
| LinkedIn Recruiter | 7 of 7 allowed | 7 | 7 |
| 5 | 1 | 1 |
When we asked for alternatives to LinkedIn Recruiter, ChatGPT and Copilot both opened with SeekOut, then hireEZ, Gem and Juicebox, in the same order. AI Overviews opened with Findem. The sourcing shortlist an AI gives a recruiter is close to fixed.
Juicebox is the interesting one. It made eight of ten answers but never cracked a top three, which suggests the engines know it but still list it after the older names. Browse the full sourcing category for the tools AI skipped.
What email finder do AI assistants recommend?
Apollo, almost without exception.
Across the email finder and ZoomInfo alternatives questions, Apollo was named first in all nine answers it was allowed into, from all five engines. Five of those answers called it the top pick outright.
Hunter and Lusha were the steady runners up, each named in 10 of 12 answers. Neither led once. ZoomInfo appeared in nine and took the lead only when we asked for alternatives to Apollo.
| Tool | Answers naming it (of 12) | In top three | Named first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apollo | 9 of 9 allowed | 9 | 9 |
| Hunter | 10 | 5 | 0 |
| Lusha | 10 | 3 | 0 |
| ZoomInfo | 9 of 9 allowed | 7 | 2 |
| 8 | 3 | 0 | |
| 5 | 3 | 0 |
Look at where the engines got this. Google’s AI Overview for “best email finder tools” built its list from four pages, and two of them were blogs run by sales software companies, including a Smartlead email finder roundup. Vendor written lists feed the AI answer, which then feeds the buyer.
Our directory tracks 96 email finders. The email finder statistics page shows which ones charge per lookup, which have a free tier and which ship an MCP server, none of which the AI answers covered well.
What cold email software do AI assistants recommend for recruiters?
Instantly. It appeared in all ten cold email answers and was named first in seven, including all three answers to “best lemlist alternatives”.
Apollo also made all ten answers and led two, both times as an all in one database plus sequencer. Smartlead made eight answers, sat in the top three in seven, and led once, in the October AI Overview.
| Tool | Answers naming it (of 10) | In top three | Named first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instantly | 10 | 9 | 7 |
| Apollo | 10 | 8 | 2 |
| Smartlead | 8 | 7 | 1 |
| 7 | 2 | 0 | |
| 7 of 7 allowed | 2 | 0 | |
| 3 | 1 | 0 |
Even though our question named recruiters, the answers were almost entirely sales tools. Only two of these ten answers mentioned a recruiting tool at all, and both put it near the bottom of the list. Claude was the exception, covered below. If you send candidate outreach, the AI will point you to the same stack a sales team uses, and you will need to work out deliverability and compliance on your own. Our cold email spam checker is a free place to start.
Do AI assistants agree on the best AI recruiting tools?
No. Six answers to “best AI recruiting tools in 2026” and “what AI agents are available for recruiting” produced five different first picks: Eightfold AI twice, then Juicebox, Pin, LinkedIn Hiring Assistant and Noon once each.
Paradox was named in five of the six answers and never placed in a top three. SeekOut, Gem and hireEZ each made four. Agent products like HeroHunt.ai, Maki People and Archer from Hackajob showed up once each.
This is the youngest category in the set and it shows. The engines have not settled on a default, which means a vendor here can still change what an AI says about it. Our AI agents page lists the agents and Grok bots we track.
What does Claude recommend for recruiting software?
Claude mostly agrees with the pack, but it gets there differently. We asked Claude Sonnet 4.6 the five core questions on October 6. It did not search the web for any of them and cited no sources, so every answer came from what the model already knew.
| Question | Claude named first | Rest of Claude’s list | Matches the other engines? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best software for a small staffing agency | Bullhorn | JobAdder, Vincere, Zoho Recruit, Loxo | Partly. The others moved to Recruit CRM for this wording; Claude stayed with Bullhorn. |
| Top platforms for sourcing passive candidates | LinkedIn Recruiter | LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Xing, SeekOut, hireEZ, AmazingHiring | Yes |
| Best email finder tools | Apollo | Hunter, ZoomInfo, Lusha, Clearbit | Yes |
| Best cold email tools | Instantly | lemlist, Apollo, Outreach, Salesloft, Woodpecker, Reply.io | Yes |
| Best AI recruiting tools in 2026 | HireVue | Greenhouse, Eightfold AI, Paradox, Beamery, SeekOut | No. Claude declined to name 2026 picks. |
The AI tools answer is the telling one. Claude said its knowledge stops in early 2025, so it could not say what is best in 2026, and offered an early 2025 list instead. That is more honest than guessing, but it means Claude missed every agent product the search based engines found, like Pin, Juicebox and LinkedIn Hiring Assistant.
Working from memory also shows in the names. Claude listed Clearbit as a standalone email finder, though HubSpot completed its acquisition of Clearbit in December 2023. It also wrote hireEZ under its older name, Hiretual.
Claude did one thing nobody else did. Its cold email answer added a separate table of recruiter specific tools, including Gem, Recruiterflow and Beamery, and pointed small agencies toward Woodpecker. It was the only cold email answer that took the “recruiters” part of the question seriously.
Where do AI assistants get their recruiting tool recommendations?
Mostly from vendors. Across the 53 answers, the engines cited 160 different sites. Vendor sites led the list: bullhorn.com was cited in seven answers, and pin.com, juicebox.ai, lever.co and apollo.io in five each. YouTube matched Bullhorn at seven.
| Source type | Examples among the most cited |
|---|---|
| Vendor websites and blogs | bullhorn.com, apollo.io, pin.com, juicebox.ai, lever.co, gem.com, hireez.com, hunter.io, snov.io, smartlead.ai, lemlist.com |
| Video | youtube.com |
| Forums | reddit.com |
| Independent review and list sites | recruitingtoolsreview.com, sourcingtools.org, toolchase.com |
Reddit turned up in four answers. Independent directories and review sites were rare. Work Insiders was cited once, by ChatGPT in its October answer on small staffing agency software.
Why does this matter for buyers?
If you ask an AI which tool to buy, you get a short list built largely from pages the vendors wrote. That does not make the answer wrong. Apollo, Instantly and SeekOut are popular for real reasons. It does mean the AI list rewards the brands with the most content, and it rarely tells you price, contract terms or whether a tool works with your ATS.
Use the AI list as a starting shortlist. Then check pricing, free plans and integrations somewhere that shows them side by side, like the Work Insiders directory or our ATS compatibility checker.
How did we run this test?
ZeroRank sent 13 recruiting software questions to each AI engine as a US user and saved the full replies. We used every reply dated September 14 to October 5, 2026. Where an engine gave the identical answer twice on the same day, we counted it once, which left 53 answers: 16 from ChatGPT, 15 from Google AI Overviews, 12 from Bing Copilot, and 5 each from Google AI Mode and Gemini.
| Category | Questions asked |
|---|---|
| Staffing agency ATS and CRM | What is the best recruiting software for a small staffing agency? Top ATS platforms for staffing firms. Best Bullhorn alternatives for staffing agencies. |
| Candidate sourcing | Top recruiting platforms for sourcing passive candidates. Best LinkedIn Recruiter alternatives for sourcing candidates. |
| Email finders | Best email finder tools for B2B prospecting in the US. Cheaper alternatives to ZoomInfo for finding contact info. Best Apollo.io alternatives. |
| Cold email | Best cold email outreach tools for recruiters and sales teams. Best Lemlist alternatives for cold email. |
| AI recruiting tools | Best AI recruiting tools in 2026. What AI agents are available for recruiting and sourcing? |
For each answer we listed every product it put forward, in order, and noted any it called the best. Sponsored ads and shopping cards that some Google answers showed were left out. Claude Sonnet 4.6 was asked the five core questions once, on October 6, through ZeroRank’s direct connection to the model, and is reported on its own rather than added to the 53. Grok and Perplexity are not in this round. Gemini and AI Mode answered only the September run, so their numbers are smaller. Corrections go to support@workinsiders.com.
Quick answers
What ATS does ChatGPT recommend for a staffing agency?
For “top ATS for staffing firms”, ChatGPT named Bullhorn first. For a small staffing agency it named Bullhorn first in September and Recruit CRM first in October.
What email finder does AI recommend most?
Apollo. It was named first in all nine email finder answers it could appear in, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Copilot. Hunter and Lusha were the most common runners up.
What is the most recommended cold email tool for recruiters?
Instantly. It appeared in all ten cold email answers and led seven. Apollo and Smartlead came next.
Which sourcing tool does AI recommend instead of LinkedIn Recruiter?
SeekOut. ChatGPT and Copilot both named it first as a LinkedIn Recruiter alternative, and it appeared in all ten sourcing answers. hireEZ, Gem and Juicebox usually followed.
Do ChatGPT and Google give the same recruiting tool recommendations?
Mostly, for established categories. Sourcing, email finders and cold email lists overlapped heavily. They split on small agency software and on AI recruiting tools, where six answers gave five different first picks.
What recruiting tools does Claude recommend?
Claude named Bullhorn first for a small staffing agency, LinkedIn Recruiter for passive sourcing, Apollo for email finding and Instantly for cold email. It declined to pick 2026 AI recruiting tools because its knowledge stops in early 2025, and it did not search the web for any answer.
Can I trust AI recommendations for recruiting software?
As a shortlist, yes. The most cited sources were vendor websites, so check price, contract terms and ATS integrations yourself before you buy.
Will these results change?
Yes. AI answers shift week to week, and repeat runs three weeks apart already changed who ChatGPT and AI Overviews named first for small agencies. We plan to rerun this test.
