US national figures, seasonally adjusted. M means million, K means thousand. Green means the number rose, red means it fell. Job counts come out a month ahead of openings, so the two use different months.

About these figures and sources

Job counts come from the BLS Current Employment Statistics survey and count jobs, not people, so one person with two jobs counts twice. Openings come from the BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey and cover every unfilled position, not staffing agency orders. The groups overlap (machinery and transportation equipment sit inside manufacturing, for example), so do not add the cards together. BLS has no separate robotics series; companies that build industrial robots are counted inside machinery manufacturing. Changes are worked out from the unrounded figures, October readings are preliminary, and BLS revises recent months, so later readings can differ from last month’s issue.

What it means for recruiters: Almost every card is green this month. Temporary help is the standout, up 3.0% on a year ago, and manufacturers posted half again as many openings as last September. Engineering services keep leading the professional sectors at 2.9% annual growth. IT services ticked up for the month but still employ fewer people than a year ago, so tech candidates remain easier to find than tech reqs.

Staffing and recruiting market

How strong was the October jobs report?

Solid, and much better than September. The U.S. added 165,000 nonfarm jobs in October against an average of 48,000 a month over the prior year, and unemployment edged down to 4.1%. Professional and business services led with 70,000 jobs, followed by health care (+42,000), transportation and warehousing (+25,000) and manufacturing (+19,000). Earlier months were revised up: August to +186,000 and September from +29,000 to +60,000, a combined 84,000 more jobs than first reported. Average hourly earnings rose 3.1% over the past year to $38.00, according to the BLS release of November 6. The November report is due December 4.

What it means for recruiters: Last month’s gloom looks overdone. With professional and business services adding jobs at more than four times their recent pace, expect hiring managers who froze reqs in September to reopen them before year end.

Is temporary staffing growing?

Yes. Temporary help services added 18,600 jobs in October to 2.53 million, per BLS Table B1, and employment services overall added 20,300. The weekly data agrees: the ASA Staffing Index stood at 95, with staffing jobs 3.5% higher than a year earlier over the four weeks ending October 25. In its October report, ASA put staffing employment up 0.9% since the September report, though only 31% of firms reported gains in new assignments in mid October, below the 42% average for the year.

What it means for recruiters: Contract demand is broadening, but new starts are uneven week to week. Firms with a mix of temp and direct hire are best placed while employers stay cautious about permanent headcount.

Are job openings rising again?

They are. Job openings rose to 7.5 million in September, a 4.5% rate, with August revised up by 111,000. Hires were 5.4 million and quits 3.4 million, a 2.1% quit rate, while layoffs held at 1.6 million, according to the BLS openings report of November 3.

What it means for recruiters: A quit rate back above 2% means more employed people are willing to move. Passive candidate outreach should convert a little better this quarter.

How big will the U.S. staffing market be in 2026?

No change since last month. Staffing Industry Analysts still expects the U.S. staffing market to grow 2.4% in 2026 to $183.1 billion, with a further 2.2% in 2027. These are estimates from the SIA September update, which remains its latest U.S. forecast.

AI: what’s new

Why is Dayforce buying Ribbon AI?

To add AI interviews to its recruiting product. On October 23, Dayforce signed an agreement to acquire Toronto based Ribbon AI, whose voice and video AI interviewer screens candidates for high volume roles and also handles sourcing, talent rediscovery and outreach. Ribbon’s technology will be built into a new Dayforce agentic recruiting experience after the deal closes. No price was disclosed, according to Staffing Industry Analysts.

What it means for recruiters: AI interviewing is moving inside the big HR suites. If you use Ribbon today with another ATS, ask about continuity before you renew.

What is HackerRank Chakra?

An AI interviewer for engineering roles, now generally available after a six month beta. Candidates work on a real code repository with an AI assistant, and Chakra asks follow up questions about their decisions, scoring problem solving, judgment and AI fluency. HackerRank said the beta ran more than 500,000 interviews, with Snowflake, Snorkel and Capgemini among the testers, and that humans still make the hiring call, per TechCrunch.

What it means for recruiters: Technical screens are shifting from testing the answer to watching how a candidate works with AI. Expect clients to ask how you assess that too.

How is Deel fighting fake candidates?

With a new product called Deel Security, launched October 29. It flags fake applications, detects deepfakes and proxy candidates in live interviews, and checks government ID with a liveness test at offer. It works inside Deel ATS, Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever and Workday, according to Deel’s announcement.

What it means for recruiters: Candidate fraud is now a product category, not a rumor. For remote IT roles especially, add an identity check before offer if your clients do not already require one. Our reference check tools are a place to start.

Is LinkedIn Hiring Assistant 2 here yet?

It is rolling out now. LinkedIn said the upgrade reaches existing English language Hiring Assistant users in November at no extra cost, with memory of how each recruiter hires, more match signals and voice pre screening, per its hiring release page.

Which new AI models came out this month?

October brought cheaper, faster models rather than new flagships:

ModelReleasedWhat changedWho can use it now
Claude Haiku 5.5 (Anthropic)October 7Anthropic’s fastest small model, about 75% cheaper to run than Haiku 4.5, from $0.10 per million input tokensDevelopers on the Claude Platform, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure (Anthropic)
GPT 6.1 Terra (OpenAI)October 26A fast model built for computer use, visual reasoning and natural writingPlus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, plus the API (OpenAI)

What it means for recruiters: Cheaper models make AI agents cheaper to run, which is where most recruiting tools are heading. Browse the options in our AI agents directory.
