A marketing qualified lead (MQL) is a lead that has shown enough interest, such as downloading a guide or visiting your pricing page, to be worth passing toward sales. It has not yet been checked for real need, budget or timing.

A lead that has shown enough interest, such as downloading a guide or visiting pricing, to be worth passing toward sales.
An MQL sits in the middle of the funnel. A contact moves from simple lead to MQL when they match your ideal customer profile and take actions that suggest interest, often tracked through a lead scoring model. The next step is for sales to qualify them, which turns an MQL into a sales qualified lead (SQL) or sends it back for more nurturing.
Common MQL triggers include requesting a salary guide, signing up for a webinar, using a free tool, visiting key service pages several times, or replying to a newsletter with a question. The definition should be agreed by whoever does marketing and whoever does sales. Without that, marketing counts MQLs that sales never calls. Review the rule each quarter against which MQLs actually became clients.
Why it matters to recruiters
For agencies and recruiting software vendors, the MQL stage stops two common failures: calling every newsletter subscriber, and ignoring people who are clearly interested. A clear MQL rule means hot contacts get a fast human follow up while the rest stay in a nurture sequence. It also gives you a useful number to track how well your content and website generate interest.
An example from a recruiting desk
Each quarter, a recruiting agency publishes a salary guide for finance roles. Anyone who downloads it and works at a company in the agency’s ICP, with a title of controller or above, becomes an MQL. The owner reviews MQLs every Friday, checks each company for open finance roles, and calls the five most promising. Two of those calls turn into job orders that month.
Tips that help
Write a one line MQL definition that marketing and sales both sign off on.
Require ICP fit, not just activity, before calling someone an MQL.
Follow up with new MQLs within one business day.
Track how many MQLs become SQLs and adjust the rule if the rate is low.
Mistakes to avoid
Counting every form fill as an MQL regardless of who filled it in.
Passing MQLs to sales with no context about what the person did.
Which tools help?

An MQL has shown interest and fits your profile. An SQL has been checked by sales and confirmed to have a real need, budget and timing. MQLs become SQLs after a qualifying conversation.
What actions make someone an MQL?
Typical triggers are downloading a guide, using a free tool, attending a webinar, visiting pricing or service pages repeatedly, or replying with a question. Which ones count should depend on your own conversion data.
Do recruiting agencies need MQLs?
If you produce content or run a website that brings in contacts, yes. An MQL rule helps you decide who to call. If all your leads come from outbound, you may skip straight to qualifying conversations.
