Most scoring models add points for fit and for behavior. Fit points come from how well a company matches your ICP and how senior the contact is. Behavior points come from actions such as replying to an email, visiting your pricing or services page, attending a webinar or downloading a guide. Some models subtract points for poor fit or long inactivity.

Simple rule based scores work well for small teams. Larger teams may use predictive scoring, where software learns from past deals which traits and actions led to wins. A score is only useful if it changes what people do. Set a threshold, such as 60 points, at which a lead goes to a recruiter or account manager for a call.

Why it matters to recruiters

Agencies and recruiting software sellers rarely have time to follow up with everyone. Lead scoring points limited hours at the contacts most likely to turn into clients and stops warm leads going cold in a CRM. It also helps marketing and sales agree on when a lead is ready, which reduces arguments about lead quality.

An example from a recruiting desk

Here is one agency's scoring model: 20 points if a company matches its ICP, 15 if the contact is a hiring decision maker, 25 for a reply, 10 for a visit to its services page and 15 if the company posted three or more relevant roles this month. Any lead above 60 goes to the owner for a call within a day. The rest stay in a nurture sequence.

Tips that help

  • Start with five to eight simple rules you can explain to the whole team.
  • Weight replies and direct actions far more than email opens.
  • Check scores against real wins every quarter and adjust the points.
  • Add a decay rule so old activity stops counting.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Giving heavy weight to email opens, which privacy features make unreliable.
  • Building a complex model nobody trusts or uses.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good lead score?

There is no universal number. A good threshold is the score above which leads in your own data turn into meetings at a clearly higher rate. Set it from your history and adjust as you learn.

What is the difference between fit and engagement scoring?

Fit scoring measures how well a lead matches your ideal client. Engagement scoring measures how actively they interact with you. Strong leads score well on both.

Do small agencies need lead scoring?

A simple version helps even small teams. Even three or four rules, such as ICP match plus recent reply, can show who to call first each morning.
