What makes a good job description?

The best job descriptions answer a candidate's real questions fast: what the job actually is, what success looks like in the first year, who they will work with, what it pays and how to apply. Keep it to roughly 300 to 600 words, lead with the role rather than the company history, and cut any requirement you would waive for a great candidate.

  • Use a plain, searchable job title
  • Say on site, hybrid or remote, and where
  • List the five to seven duties that take most of the time
  • Separate must haves from nice to haves
  • Include the pay range
  • Tell people what happens after they apply

Frequently asked questions

Are these job description templates free?

Yes. Copy, edit, download or print any of them with no signup.

Do I have to include a salary range in a job description?

A growing number of US states and cities require pay ranges in job postings. Check the rules where the job is based. Including a range also tends to attract more qualified applicants.

How long should a job description be?

Around 300 to 600 words is enough for most roles. Long enough to answer the main questions, short enough to read on a phone.
