An employer of record, or EOR, is a service that legally employs workers on your behalf in countries where you do not have an entity. The EOR handles payroll, taxes, benefits, and compliance with local labor law while you manage the day to day work. It is the fastest way to hire internationally without setting up foreign subsidiaries.
Entity ownership is the key question. Some EORs own their local entities. Others rely on partners, which adds risk and slows support. Check country coverage against your hiring plans, and confirm the EOR handles benefits, not just payroll. Pricing transparency matters. Some vendors hide fees for offboarding, currency conversion, or expense management. Ask about support response times, since employment issues are time sensitive.
Per employee per month pricing is standard, typically 200 to 600 dollars depending on the country. Contractor management plans are cheaper. Enterprise deals with volume commitments can bring rates down.
Treating the EOR as a commodity. Service quality varies enormously, and a bad EOR creates legal exposure in unfamiliar jurisdictions.
