What is visitor identification?

Visitor identification is the use of tools that reveal which companies, and sometimes which people, visited your website, so you can follow up with them. Agencies and vendors use it to spot warm prospects who are researching services but have not filled in a form.

Company level identification usually works by matching a visitor's IP address to the organization that owns it, then showing the company name, pages viewed and visit time. Person level identification goes further, matching cookies or other signals to data on individuals. It tends to have lower match rates and higher privacy risk, and accuracy has fallen as more people work remotely on home networks.

Privacy law sets the limits. In the EU and UK, tracking that identifies individuals generally needs consent under GDPR and cookie rules. Several US states have privacy laws that require notice and opt out rights for some tracking. Your website privacy notice should describe what you collect. Rules vary by location and change, and this is not legal advice.

Why it matters to recruiters

For staffing agencies, a hiring manager reading your engineering staffing page or salary guide is a strong signal of need. Visitor identification lets business developers reach out while that interest is fresh, rather than cold calling at random. It also shows which content attracts the right companies, so marketing effort goes to what works.

An example from a recruiting desk

An IT staffing firm adds company level visitor identification to its site. One week it sees a regional bank visit the cloud engineering services page four times and the contact page twice. A business developer checks the bank's careers page, finds three open cloud roles and sends the hiring manager a short note offering two relevant candidates. A call is booked within days.

Tips that help

  • Start with company level identification, which is more accurate and lower risk.
  • Update your privacy notice and cookie banner before you switch tracking on.
  • Filter out existing clients, competitors and job seekers before sales reviews the list.
  • Reach out with something useful, not a mention that you saw them on your site.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating every company visit as buying intent when many visitors are job seekers.
  • Turning on person level tracking for EU visitors without valid consent.

Frequently asked questions

How does website visitor identification work?

Most tools match the visitor's IP address to a company that owns or uses that network, then show the company and pages viewed. Some add person level matching through cookies and data partners. Remote work and VPNs reduce accuracy.

Is visitor identification legal?

It depends on where visitors are and how the tool works. Company level identification is widely used. Person level tracking faces stricter rules, especially in the EU and UK and in some US states. Check your privacy notice and local law. This is not legal advice.

How should I follow up with a website visitor?

Do not say you saw them on your site, which feels intrusive. Use the signal to time a relevant message, such as candidates or insights matching the page they read. Keep it short and offer something useful.
