What it does

Write a short, professional resignation letter with your last day and an offer to help hand over. PDF or text.

Use the tool

A resignation letter puts your notice in writing: the job you are leaving, your last day, and a polite close. It protects you if dates are ever disputed and keeps the door open for a good reference later. Fill in the details and pick a style. Recruiters can share this page with candidates who are about to resign.

What a resignation letter should say

  • That you are resigning, and from which job.
  • Your last day of work. Two weeks’ notice is the usual US standard unless your contract says otherwise.
  • An offer to help hand over your work.
  • A short thank you. Leave out complaints; the letter goes in your file.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to give a reason for leaving?

No. A reason is optional. If you give one, keep it short and positive, such as a new role or a move.

Should I email it or hand it in?

Tell your manager in person or on a call first, then send the letter the same day. Copy the text into an email, or attach the PDF.

What if my employer counters with more money?

Decide before you resign what, if anything, would make you stay. Most recruiters advise against accepting a counter offer, because the reasons you wanted to leave usually remain.

Is what I type saved? No, the letter is built in your browser and nothing is uploaded. More free letters: employment verification, reference letter and offer letter.
