What it does
Write a short, standard or detailed LinkedIn recommendation from a few answers, plus a message to ask for one.
Why it matters: a recommendation is one of the few things on a LinkedIn profile that someone else wrote, so recruiters and hiring managers read them. Most say “great to work with” and nothing else. The ones that help name how you know the person, two or three strengths and one real result. This generator builds that structure from your answers so you only have to fill in the facts.
Write a LinkedIn recommendation
Answer a few questions. You get a short, a standard and a detailed version to paste into LinkedIn, plus a message you can send to ask someone for one.
Everything runs in your browser and is saved on this device only. Read it through and change anything that does not sound like you before you post it.
What makes a good LinkedIn recommendation?
| Part | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| How you know them | Your relationship, where and for how long | I managed Maya at Northpoint Staffing for three years |
| Strengths | Two or three, not ten | Client relationships, closing offers, mentoring others |
| Proof | One real example, ideally with a number | She filled 14 nursing roles in one quarter |
| Close | Would you work with them again? | I would hire Maya again tomorrow |
What are some good LinkedIn recommendation examples?
Each of these follows the same pattern: relationship, strengths, one result, close. Swap in your own facts.
| For | Example |
|---|---|
| Someone you managed | I managed Maya at Northpoint Staffing for three years, where she was a Senior Recruiter. She stood out for building strong client relationships and closing offers. One example: she filled 14 nursing roles in one quarter for a hospital that had been stuck for six months. I would hire Maya again tomorrow. |
| A colleague | I worked alongside Sam on the sourcing team at Acme for two years. Sam found people no one else could and kept everyone informed without being asked. When our biggest client needed six data engineers in a month, Sam delivered five. I would happily work with Sam again. |
| Your manager | Priya was my manager at Brightline, where she was Head of Talent Acquisition. She shaped how I work today. She stood out for clear communication and mentoring others, and she cut our time to hire by a third in her first year. Any team would be lucky to have her. |
| A candidate you placed | I recruited Jordan in 2025, when he was a Staff Engineer. I saw how he handled every interview and the offer, and I heard from the client after he started. He stood out for staying calm under pressure and learning fast. I would happily work with Jordan again. |
| A client | I worked with Elena as a client at Cox Automotive. She gave clear briefs, quick feedback and honest reasons when a candidate was not right, which is why we filled four senior roles in a quarter together. I would happily work with Elena again. |
How long should a LinkedIn recommendation be?
LinkedIn allows up to 3,000 characters, per AuthoredUp’s limits list, but a few short paragraphs are plenty. The short version suits a peer or a quick favour, the standard version suits most people, and the detailed version suits someone you managed or know very well.
How do you ask someone for a recommendation?
Ask someone who saw your work up close, keep the request short, say what you would like them to mention, and offer to write one back. Add their first name in the tool and it writes that message too. Send it as a LinkedIn message, then use the Ask for a recommendation option on your profile so they get a direct link.
Frequently asked questions
How do I post a recommendation on LinkedIn?
Go to the person’s profile, tap More, then Recommend. Choose your relationship and their role at the time, paste your text and send. They approve it before it appears on their profile.
Can a recruiter write a recommendation for a candidate they placed?
Yes, and pick “I recruited or placed them” in the tool. Stick to what you saw yourself: how they interviewed, how they handled the offer and what the client said after they started. The tool writes the detailed version that way.
How is this different from the reference letter template?
A LinkedIn recommendation is short and public. A reference letter is longer, private and usually sent to one employer. For that, use the reference letter generator, which gives you a signed PDF.
