Interview question banks with what a strong answer sounds like

Pick a role or an interview type to get a full question bank. Every question comes with a short note on what a strong answer includes, so interviewers score against the same bar instead of gut feel.

You can download any list as a Word file or print it with space for notes, and pair it with the free interview scorecard template.

How many interview questions should you ask?

Plan six to ten questions for a 45 minute interview and leave time for the candidate's own questions. Pick from the bank based on what the role needs most, ask every candidate for the role the same core questions, and use follow ups to get to specifics.

Frequently asked questions

How do you choose interview questions for a role?

Start from the three to five things the person must do well in the first year, then pick questions that ask for real past examples of each. Ask every candidate the same core questions so you can compare answers fairly.

Which interview questions are illegal to ask?

In the US, avoid questions about age, race, religion, national origin, disability, pregnancy, family plans, marital status and other protected traits. State and city laws add more, such as salary history bans. Check with HR or counsel; this is not legal advice.

Should interviewers take notes during the interview?

Yes. Short notes on what the candidate actually said make scoring fairer and decisions easier to explain. Write the score after the interview, against the scorecard, before talking to other interviewers.
