Email verification is checking that an email address exists and can receive mail before you send to it. It protects your bounce rate and sender reputation, which decide whether your outreach to candidates and clients lands in the inbox or in spam.

Checking that an email address exists and can receive mail before you send to it, which protects your bounce rate.
A verifier runs several checks. It confirms the address is correctly formatted, the domain exists and has mail servers, and then asks the server whether that specific mailbox accepts mail, without sending a message. It also flags role addresses, disposable domains and known spam traps.
Results usually fall into groups such as valid, invalid, catch all, unknown and risky. Valid addresses are safe to send. Invalid ones should be removed. Catch all and unknown results cannot be confirmed and should be sent carefully in small batches, if at all.
Data goes stale quickly as people change jobs, so verify close to the time you send, not months earlier when the list was built. Many outreach and CRM tools can run verification automatically on import, which saves a manual step and stops bad addresses entering a sequence.
Why it matters to recruiters
Hard bounces tell inbox providers you are mailing a poor list, which can push all your email toward spam, including messages to placed candidates and clients. Verification is a cheap step that protects the deliverability every recruiter depends on, especially when sending volume outreach from a sequencing tool.
An example from a recruiting desk
For a client development campaign, an agency imports 2,000 contacts from a data provider. Verification marks 1,520 valid, 180 invalid, 260 catch all and 40 unknown. The team removes the invalid addresses, sends to the valid group first and tests 50 catch all addresses. The campaign's bounce rate stays low and the mailboxes stay healthy.
Tips that help
Verify any list that has not been mailed in the last few months.
Remove invalid addresses at once and never retry them.
Send catch all and unknown addresses in small, separate batches.
Verify again right before a big campaign, not only when the list is built.
Mistakes to avoid
Assuming addresses from a paid data provider are already verified.
Treating catch all results as safe because the server accepted them.
Which tools help?
A few of the email verification tools in our directory, including our picks. Prices are the published starting price on the date we last checked.
How does email verification work without sending an email?
The verifier checks the domain's mail servers and starts a mail server conversation that asks whether the mailbox exists, then stops before any message is sent.
What does catch all mean in email verification?
A catch all domain accepts mail for any address, so the verifier cannot confirm whether a specific mailbox exists. The address may work or may bounce later.
How often should I verify my email lists?
Verify before every large send and whenever a list has sat unused for a few months. Contact data decays as people change jobs, so older lists carry more risk.
