Quick answer
A Boolean search string is a line of keywords joined by AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses that tells LinkedIn, Google, Indeed or GitHub exactly who you want. Below are 30 strings you can copy, grouped by role, each labelled with the platform it was written for. Swap the city and tools, run it, and tighten from there.
Key takeaways
- LinkedIn reads only five tools: AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, typed with capital letter operators. Wildcards are not supported.
- Sales Navigator allows a maximum of 15 Boolean operators per search, while Recruiter and Recruiter Lite have no operator limit, according to LinkedIn.
- Google X ray strings use a minus sign to exclude and
site:to stay on one domain. Never paste NOT into Google or a minus sign into LinkedIn. - Indeed resume search adds field commands like
skill:andfieldofstudy:, and GitHub has its own qualifiers such aslanguage:andlocation:. - Most failed searches come from curly quotes, a missing parenthesis, or an operator in lowercase, not from the platform.
- Our free builder writes the parentheses for you if you would rather fill in boxes than type strings.
How is this list different from our other Boolean guides?
This page is the strings library. If you want the full explanation of how LinkedIn treats each operator, read our LinkedIn Boolean guide. If you want the desk method for turning a job description into a string, read our Boolean searches guide. Here we keep the theory short and give you 30 working examples across eight role families, so you can paste first and learn by editing.
We checked every operator claim against official help pages from LinkedIn, Google, GitHub, Indeed and Naukri in September 2026. Platforms change search behavior without notice, so test each string before relying on it.
How do you do a Boolean search?
You do a Boolean search by listing the titles you would accept, joining them with OR inside parentheses, adding the must have skills with AND, and dropping obvious junk with NOT. Quotes keep a multi word title together. The cheat sheet below shows each operator and where it works.
| Operator | What it does | Example | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| AND | Every term must appear | accountant AND CPA | LinkedIn, Indeed, Naukri. Google treats a space as AND. |
| OR | Any one term can appear | (SDR OR BDR) | Everywhere. Type it in capitals. |
| NOT | Drops a term | NOT (intern OR student) | LinkedIn, Indeed, Naukri |
| Minus sign | Drops a term in Google | -intern | Google only |
| Quotes | Exact phrase | "travel nurse" | Everywhere. Use straight quotes. |
| Parentheses | Groups logic | VP NOT (assistant OR SVP) | Everywhere |
| site: | Limits results to one domain | site:linkedin.com/in | |
| intitle: and inurl: | Matches the page title or URL | -intitle:jobs -inurl:dir | Google, unofficial |
| filetype: | Finds a file type such as a resume PDF | filetype:pdf "resume" | |
| Field commands | Searches one part of a profile | skill:(ICU OR telemetry) | Indeed, GitHub (as qualifiers) |
What order does LinkedIn read the operators in?
LinkedIn resolves quotes first, then parentheses, then NOT, then AND, and OR last, according to LinkedIn’s Boolean help page. Because OR comes last, always wrap your title list in parentheses.
Which Google operators matter for X ray searches?
Google officially documents quotes, the minus sign, site:, filetype:, before: and after: on its Google search help page, and the Google Search Central operator list adds imagesize: and src:. Google’s help also says not to leave a space after the colon. The intitle: and inurl: operators are no longer on Google’s official list, so treat them as useful but unsupported.
Which platforms accept which operators?
Each platform speaks its own dialect of Boolean, and a string written for LinkedIn will usually break in Google. Check this table before you paste.
| Platform | Operators | Limits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free LinkedIn | AND, OR, NOT, quotes, parentheses | Capped operator count, number not published | No wildcards; plus and minus not supported; stop words like “in” and “with” are dropped |
| Sales Navigator | Same five | 15 operators per search | Long strings get cut silently |
| Recruiter and Recruiter Lite | Same five | No operator limit | Paid seat, so long strings belong here |
| Google X ray | Quotes, OR, minus, site:, filetype: | Historically 32 words | NOT and AND are read as plain words |
| Indeed Smart Sourcing | AND, OR, NOT, quotes, parentheses | Not published | Field commands like skill: and school: |
| Naukri Resdex | AND, OR, NOT in the Boolean Search box | Not published | EZ Keywords boxes are the default form |
| GitHub user search | Qualifiers such as language:, location:, repos: | Not published | Search ignores case; email domains cannot be searched |
How long can a LinkedIn Boolean string be?
LinkedIn’s Boolean query limitations page says free search has a cap on operators, Sales Navigator allows a maximum of 15, and Recruiter and Recruiter Lite have no limit. Every LinkedIn string in this library uses 15 operators or fewer, so each one also runs in Sales Navigator. If a long string stops working on a free account, split it into two searches.
Does Google still cap searches at 32 words?
Google long limited queries to 32 words, as the independent Google Guide documents. In 2025 search watchers reported that longer queries now go through, but Google has published no new rule, so we keep every X ray string here under 32 words.
How does Indeed resume search handle Boolean?
Indeed’s resume database now sits inside Indeed Smart Sourcing. It accepts AND, OR, NOT, quotes and parentheses, and Indeed’s healthcare guide adds field commands such as skill:, school: and fieldofstudy:. Recruiters on r/recruiting have complained that exact phrase matching on Indeed has felt looser since AI matching arrived, so spot check that quoted terms really appear in the resumes you get back.
What does a Boolean search in Naukri look like?
Naukri Resdex offers two forms. The default EZ Keywords form splits your search into Any, All and Exclude boxes, and the classic Boolean Search box takes a full string, according to Naukri’s Recruiter Zone. A Java example for the Boolean box looks like ("java developer" OR "java engineer") AND ("spring boot" OR microservices) AND NOT (testing OR support).
What are good Boolean strings for software engineers?
Engineering searches work best with a broad title list and a specific stack list, because developers describe themselves in many ways but almost always name their framework. These eight strings cover Java, Python, frontend and DevOps.
| # | Role | String | Use on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Java backend | ("java developer" OR "java engineer" OR "backend engineer") AND ("spring boot" OR spring) AND (microservices OR kafka) NOT (recruiter OR intern OR student) | |
| 2 | Java backend | site:linkedin.com/in ("java developer" OR "java engineer") "spring boot" (kafka OR microservices) "Chicago" -intitle:jobs -inurl:dir | Google X ray |
| 3 | Java open source | language:java location:"Chicago" repos:>10 type:user | GitHub user search |
| 4 | Python | ("python developer" OR "python engineer" OR "data engineer") AND (django OR fastapi OR flask) AND (AWS OR GCP) NOT (recruiter OR intern) | |
| 5 | Frontend | ("frontend engineer" OR "front end developer" OR "UI engineer") AND (react OR "next.js") AND typescript NOT (designer OR recruiter) | |
| 6 | Frontend | site:stackoverflow.com/users (reactjs OR typescript) "London" | Google X ray |
| 7 | DevOps and SRE | ("devops engineer" OR "site reliability engineer" OR SRE OR "platform engineer") AND (kubernetes OR terraform) AND (AWS OR azure) NOT (recruiter OR sales) | |
| 8 | DevOps | ("devops engineer" OR SRE) AND skill:(kubernetes OR terraform) AND "Denver" | Indeed |
GitHub’s own search uses qualifiers rather than Boolean words. GitHub’s user search docs list language:, location:, repos:, followers: and type:user, and they ask for quotes around multi word values like a city with two words.
What Boolean strings work for nurses and healthcare roles?
Healthcare strings lean on licences and units rather than titles. Put every version of the title in one OR group and add the certification as a must have.
| # | Role | String | Use on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | ICU nurse | ("registered nurse" OR RN) AND (ICU OR "intensive care" OR "critical care") AND (CCRN OR BSN) NOT (student OR "nurse recruiter") | |
| 10 | Travel nurse | ("travel nurse" OR "travel RN") AND skill:("med surg" OR telemetry) AND ("Arizona" OR "Nevada") | Indeed |
| 11 | Nurse practitioner | site:linkedin.com/in ("nurse practitioner" OR FNP OR APRN) "Dallas" ("primary care" OR "urgent care") -intitle:jobs -inurl:dir | Google X ray |
| 12 | CNA and patient care | ("certified nursing assistant" OR CNA OR "patient care technician") AND ("long term care" OR "skilled nursing") NOT (student OR trainee) | Indeed |
What Boolean strings find sales, finance and marketing candidates?
Business roles have the messiest titles, so the software people name is often a better signal than the title itself.
| # | Role | String | Use on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 | SaaS account executive | ("account executive" OR "enterprise account executive") AND (SaaS OR "software sales") AND (salesforce OR hubspot) NOT (recruiter OR intern OR "real estate") | |
| 14 | SDR or BDR | ("sales development representative" OR SDR OR "business development representative" OR BDR) AND (outreach OR salesloft OR "cold calling") NOT (manager OR director) | |
| 15 | Medical device sales | site:linkedin.com/in ("medical device sales" OR "surgical sales" OR "orthopedic sales") ("Boston" OR "New England") -intitle:jobs -inurl:dir | Google X ray |
| 16 | Staff accountant | ("staff accountant" OR "senior accountant" OR "general ledger accountant") AND ("month end close" OR reconciliations) AND (netsuite OR quickbooks) NOT (intern OR clerk) | Indeed |
| 17 | Controller | (controller OR "assistant controller" OR "accounting manager") AND CPA AND (GAAP OR "SEC reporting") NOT (student OR recruiter) | |
| 18 | FP&A analyst | site:linkedin.com/in ("financial analyst" OR "FP&A") (anaplan OR "adaptive insights" OR "financial modeling") "Charlotte" -intitle:jobs -inurl:dir | Google X ray |
| 19 | Demand generation | ("demand generation" OR "growth marketing" OR "performance marketing") AND (hubspot OR marketo) AND (B2B OR SaaS) NOT (intern OR student) | |
| 20 | SEO manager | ("SEO manager" OR "SEO specialist" OR "search engine optimization") AND ("technical SEO" OR "google search console" OR ahrefs) NOT (intern OR freelance) | |
| 21 | Designer portfolios | (site:dribbble.com OR site:behance.net) ("product designer" OR "brand designer") "Toronto" | Google X ray |
What Boolean strings work for trades, drivers and warehouse roles?
Many trades and logistics candidates never update LinkedIn, so most of these strings target Indeed’s resume database. Licences and equipment names do the heavy lifting, because a resume naming an EPA 608 card or a Class A CDL is rarely a false match.
| # | Role | String | Use on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 | Electrician | ("journeyman electrician" OR "master electrician" OR "industrial electrician") AND (PLC OR "motor controls" OR conduit) AND ("Houston" OR "Pasadena") | Indeed |
| 23 | HVAC technician | ("HVAC technician" OR "HVAC service technician" OR "refrigeration technician") AND ("EPA 608" OR "EPA certified") NOT (sales OR estimator) | LinkedIn or Indeed |
| 24 | CNC machinist | ("CNC machinist" OR "CNC programmer" OR "CNC operator") AND (fanuc OR haas OR mazak) AND (mastercam OR "G code") | Indeed |
| 25 | Truck driver | ("Class A CDL" OR "CDL A" OR "CDL Class A") AND ("tractor trailer" OR OTR OR regional) AND (hazmat OR tanker) NOT (trainee OR student) | Indeed |
| 26 | Warehouse supervisor | ("warehouse supervisor" OR "shift supervisor" OR "warehouse lead") AND (WMS OR "manhattan associates" OR "SAP EWM") AND (forklift OR OSHA) NOT (sales OR recruiter) | |
| 27 | Forklift operator | ("forklift operator" OR "reach truck" OR "material handler") AND ("forklift certified" OR "forklift certification") AND ("Columbus" OR "Ohio") | Indeed |
How do you write Boolean strings for executive search?
Executive strings need a tight title group and a context signal such as funding stage, ownership or a deal type. Without that context, a VP search fills up with assistants and coordinators who work for VPs, which is why LinkedIn’s own example is VP NOT (assistant OR SVP).
| # | Role | String | Use on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 | CFO | (CFO OR "chief financial officer" OR "VP finance" OR "vice president finance") AND ("private equity" OR "PE backed" OR IPO) NOT (assistant OR intern) | LinkedIn Recruiter |
| 29 | VP engineering | site:linkedin.com/in ("VP engineering" OR "vice president of engineering" OR "head of engineering") ("Series B" OR "Series C") "San Francisco" -intitle:jobs -inurl:dir | Google X ray |
| 30 | Chief people officer | (CHRO OR "chief people officer" OR "chief human resources officer" OR "VP people") AND (acquisition OR merger OR "change management") NOT (assistant OR coordinator) |
For senior searches we would run the string in LinkedIn Recruiter rather than free search, because Recruiter has no operator limit. If Recruiter is out of budget, our Recruiter alternatives guide compares the options.
What are the most common Boolean search mistakes?
- Curly quotes. Quotes pasted from Word, Docs or Slack look right but do not work. Retype them in the search box.
- Lowercase operators. LinkedIn requires AND, OR and NOT in capitals, and Google only treats OR as an operator in capitals.
- A missing parenthesis. One unclosed bracket changes the meaning of everything after it.
- Too many AND terms. Each extra must have shrinks the pool. Start with two required skills and add more only if results are too loose.
- Dialect mixing. NOT in Google or a minus sign in LinkedIn will quietly fail.
- Over excluding. Only exclude words you have seen causing false matches.
Is there a Boolean search generator that writes strings for you?
Yes. Our free Boolean search string builder turns titles, skills, location and exclusions into a ready string for LinkedIn, Google X ray, GitHub, Stack Overflow, Dribbble and Behance, or Xing. It runs in your browser with no signup, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
AI sourcing tools such as SeekOut and hireEZ can also build searches from plain English. They are faster for volume, but a string you can read is still how you check why a candidate appeared and how you repeat a search next month. Our AI recruiting tools roundup covers where each fits, and the sourcing directory lists every tool we track.
Boolean search FAQ
Is there a Boolean search cheat sheet PDF?
You can turn this page into one by using your browser’s print option and choosing save as PDF. The operator table and the platform table near the top work as a one page cheat sheet.
How do you make a great Boolean search?
Start short, with a title group and two must have skills, then read the first page of results. Add OR variants for good people you missed and NOT terms for repeated false matches, one change at a time.
Why does my LinkedIn Boolean search stop working when it gets long?
Free LinkedIn caps the number of operators in one search and Sales Navigator allows 15. Split the string into two searches or run it in Recruiter, which has no operator limit.
Does LinkedIn support wildcards like an asterisk?
No. LinkedIn does not support wildcards, braces or brackets, so write out every spelling with OR, for example (engineer OR engineering).
Why is Indeed Boolean search not returning exact matches?
Indeed blends AI matching into its resume results, and recruiters report that quoted phrases sometimes show resumes without the phrase. Use field commands like skill: and spot check the top results.
