Clay vs ZoomInfo: Which Is Better for Recruiting Business Development? (2026)

Pick Clay for custom hiring signal lists at published prices from $185 a month with unlimited seats; pick ZoomInfo for deep owned phone, org chart and intent data on a quoted annual contract (Vendr median $33,500).

Pick Clay if you build custom target lists, want hiring signals and AI research on every row, and need to start this week on a card: plans run from free to $185 and $495 a month with unlimited seats. Pick ZoomInfo if you need one large owned database with deep phone data, org charts and intent, and can sign a quoted annual contract; Vendr puts the median ZoomInfo buyer at $33,500 a year. For agency recruiters doing business development, Clay usually fits first. ZoomInfo is worth it when your firm already owns it or your desk lives on direct dials. You can also run ZoomInfo as a data source inside Clay.

What is the difference between Clay and ZoomInfo?

Clay is a workbench that pulls data from many providers. ZoomInfo is one large database that it builds and owns. That single difference drives price, setup time and who each one suits.

Clay works like a spreadsheet that runs enrichments. You load companies or people, then Clay checks one provider after another until it finds a valid email or phone. Its Clay pricing page says it buys data from 150+ data partners; its Clay homepage says 200+ data and AI vendors.

ZoomInfo sells its own records. The ZoomInfo data page claims 500M+ professional profiles, 122M+ company records, 135M+ direct dial numbers and 4,500+ intent topics, backed by human researchers. You search it, export what you need, and push it to your CRM.

We already compared each of them with Apollo. Read Clay vs Apollo and Apollo vs ZoomInfo if Apollo is on your shortlist too.

How much do Clay and ZoomInfo cost in 2026?

Clay publishes its self serve prices. ZoomInfo’s ZoomInfo pricing page shows no seat prices and says it offers “custom packages based on your B2B data use cases and needs.” The only public ZoomInfo prices are for GTM.ai, its headless data service.

What does a ZoomInfo contract really cost?

ZoomInfo does not say, so the best public figure comes from buyers. The Vendr ZoomInfo benchmark, built from 1,577 purchases, puts the median at $33,500 a year, with deals from $7,240 to $156,042. Vendr says pricing combines a base platform fee, per seat licenses and data credits. Treat these as third party estimates, not quotes.

Is Clay cheaper than ZoomInfo for a small agency?

Almost always, on list price. This is a Work Insiders calculation from monthly list prices, with no add on credits, and Clay’s price covers the whole team.

OptionYearly costWhat you get
Clay Launch$2,220 ($185 times 12)30,000 Data Credits a year, any number of users
Clay Growth$5,940 ($495 times 12)72,000 Data Credits a year plus CRM sync
GTM.ai, 5,000 recordsAbout $1,900 at the $0.38 rate5,000 enriched records, no mobiles
ZoomInfo contractQuote; Vendr median $33,500Seats, app, credits as negotiated

The Vendr median is not tied to a seat count. It still pays for about 15 years of Clay Launch at list price. A three person desk will rarely justify a full ZoomInfo contract unless phones are the whole job.

How much does each contact cost?

Clay says a fully enriched record with company data, email, phone and AI usually costs 6 to 20 Data Credits. Data Credits start at $0.05, so that is $0.30 to $1.00 per record, plus 1 Action per step. Clay charges nothing when an enrichment finds no result. Use your own provider API keys and you skip Data Credits, though Actions still count.

On GTM.ai, 1 data credit enriches one record, at $0.38 a credit at the $1,000 tier. Search and lookup are free. GTM.ai says it charges once per record per year, but its FAQ says that Records Under Management guarantee is an Enterprise benefit, not part of the free tier. Its page also says credits “never expire while your account is active,” while the FAQ says they expire 12 months after they are granted. Ask before you buy a large block.

Which has better data coverage and accuracy?

No neutral head to head test exists. Here is what each vendor claims on its own site.

ZoomInfo claims 96% email deliverability, 87% mobile number accuracy and a 72% direct dial hit rate. By region, it lists 157.8M+ contacts and 77.7M+ mobile numbers in North America, and 66M+ contacts and 18.5M+ mobiles in Europe. It says human analysts validate high stakes or ambiguous records.

Clay makes no single database claim, because coverage depends on which providers you stack. Its waterfall enrichment page lists email providers such as Prospeo, DropContact, Hunter, People Data Labs, Apollo, Lusha and Snov, and phone providers such as People Data Labs and ContactOut. Clay says this routinely triples coverage. Test that on your own list.

The practical read: ZoomInfo is the stronger bet for US direct dials and mobiles from one source. Clay is the stronger bet for niche markets where any single database leaves gaps, such as small local firms or thin industries.

How do enrichment and workflows differ?

In Clay, you build the workflow. Each column is a step: find the company, find the hiring manager, run a waterfall for the email, verify it, score the row with AI, then push it to a sequencer or CRM. Clay puts it plainly on its homepage: “GTM engineers build on Clay.” Expect weeks, not days, to get fluent, and watch auto run columns that spend credits on every row.

In ZoomInfo, the data is already joined up. You filter by title, company size, location or intent, export, and sync. ZoomInfo’s GTM Workspace page says it sits on top of Salesforce, HubSpot or Dynamics with a two way sync, so reps work from one screen. Less flexible, much faster to learn.

Can you use ZoomInfo inside Clay?

Yes. Clay’s ZoomInfo integration docs let you connect your own ZoomInfo account and run Enrich company and Enrich contact steps in a Clay table. That needs a ZoomInfo account, so it suits firms that already pay for ZoomInfo and want Clay’s workflow and other providers on top.

Which is better for recruiting and business development?

Which finds companies that are hiring right now?

Both do, in different ways. Clay’s staffing leads guide describes asking Sculptor for companies hiring in your market, filtering by open job count and headcount growth, then waterfalling for a verified email at the hiring manager. Clay’s Find Jobs lesson says job data comes from PredictLeads, Google Jobs and Clay’s own jobs database, up to 1,000 jobs per query.

ZoomInfo claims 9M+ job postings a month in its data, and GTM Workspace’s Pulse Feed lists hiring activity among its 15+ signal types. You get the signal without building anything, but you cannot reshape it the way you can in Clay.

Which is better for finding candidate contact details?

ZoomInfo, because it sells a recruiting product. Its ZoomInfo Talent page describes Talent Autopilot, an AI recruiting agent that finds candidates from a plain language brief, explains why each one fits, and gives verified emails and mobile numbers. It lists ATS integrations including Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS, Lever and SmartRecruiters. Pricing is by demo and quote.

Clay has no candidate product. You can still find personal emails and phones through its waterfalls, but you build it yourself, and phone enrichment needs Launch or higher.

Can an agency use the data for clients?

Read ZoomInfo’s terms first. Its license terms allow recruiting and business development use, but bar using the data for the benefit of anyone except the licensee, and bar selling or sharing it with third parties. If you deliver lists to clients, ask ZoomInfo how that applies before you sign.

What AI features does each one have?

Clay’s AI does research. The Claygent page says Claygents in tables are on every plan and can browse the web, while Account Agents that track every account in a segment are on Launch, Growth and Enterprise. Each prompt costs 1 Action plus Data Credits that vary by model. Sculptor is Clay’s copilot: describe who you want to sell to and it sets up the table and suggests enrichments.

ZoomInfo’s AI works on its own data. The ZoomInfo Copilot page describes account prioritization from buyer signals, research, drafted emails and automated follow ups. GTM Workspace adds AI Chat and AI Docs for briefs and outreach. For recruiters, Talent Autopilot does candidate discovery.

The short version: Claygent can research anything public, such as whether a firm just opened an office or posted a role you fill. ZoomInfo’s AI is better at telling you which known accounts and contacts to work today.

Do Clay and ZoomInfo have an API and MCP server?

Both run official MCP servers. The Clay MCP page says reps can run Clay Functions, reason across Audiences and return up to 1,000 People Search results from ChatGPT, Codex or Claude. Clay’s HTTP API integrations and webhooks start on Growth; full Clay API access is listed on Enterprise.

ZoomInfo’s ZoomInfo MCP docs say you need a ZoomInfo license, either GTM.ai self serve or Enterprise, and that model training must be turned off in your AI tool first. GTM.ai includes MCP, API and CLI access on its free tier, limited to 5 apps. Both spend the same credits through MCP as in the app.

What should you know about contracts and renewals?

Clay’s Launch and Growth plans are self serve, monthly or annual. Clay’s docs say unused Data Credits roll over up to 2 times the monthly amount on monthly plans, and up to 15% on annual plans if you renew at the same tier or higher. Actions reset each cycle. Extra Data Credits bought mid cycle cost a 30% premium.

ZoomInfo’s license terms say “The Agreement is not cancellable” and that the term is set in your order form. Vendr reports 1 to 3 year contracts, annual prepayment as standard, and auto renewal clauses that often include 5% to 10% yearly increases. Vendr suggests negotiating 90 to 120 days of notice.

Before you sign ZoomInfo, get these in writing: credits per year, overage rates, renewal notice period, price increase cap, and whether integrations carry a base fee.

Who should choose Clay?

  • Agency recruiters who build target lists from hiring signals and job posts.
  • Small desks that want to start this week on a card, with no sales call.
  • Teams whose niche is thin in any single database.
  • Teams of several users who want one flat fee instead of seats.
  • Firms that already own ZoomInfo and want to add other providers around it.

Who should choose ZoomInfo?

  • Recruiting or sales teams in a company that already pays for ZoomInfo.
  • Phone heavy desks that need the deepest US direct dial and mobile data.
  • Corporate talent teams that want a candidate product with ATS integrations.
  • Account based sales teams that need org charts, intent and alerts in one place.
  • Teams with no one to build and maintain Clay tables.

How should you trial Clay and ZoomInfo?

Pull 50 to 100 real targets first: hiring managers at companies you want as clients, with names you know are correct. Run the same list through both.

Clay offers a 14 day trial with 1,000 Data Credits, but its docs say phone enrichment is not available during the trial, so compare emails first. ZoomInfo offers a free trial through its site, and GTM.ai gives 1,000 data credits free through MCP or API, without mobile numbers.

Score three things: the share of targets with a verified email, mobiles that reach the right person, and bounces on a small test send. Then compare cost per usable contact, not sticker price, and get any ZoomInfo quote in writing.

Quick answers

Can Clay replace ZoomInfo?
For email data and list building, often yes, because Clay checks many providers. For deep US direct dials, org charts, intent and a recruiting product, ZoomInfo still does more from one source.

Is Clay cheaper than ZoomInfo?
On list price, yes. Clay Launch is $2,220 a year at monthly rates for the whole team. ZoomInfo is quote only, and Vendr puts the median contract at $33,500 a year.

Does ZoomInfo have a free plan?
Not for its main app. GTM.ai, ZoomInfo’s headless service, starts free with 1,000 data and 1,000 AI credits through API, MCP or CLI, with no mobile numbers below Enterprise.

Can I use ZoomInfo data inside Clay?
Yes. Clay has a ZoomInfo integration for company and contact enrichment, but you need your own ZoomInfo account to connect it.

Which is better for agency recruiters doing business development?
Clay for most small agencies: it finds companies hiring for your roles and the hiring manager’s email at a published price. ZoomInfo is worth it when your desk depends on direct dials or your firm already owns it.

Can I cancel a ZoomInfo contract early?
ZoomInfo’s license terms say the agreement is not cancellable, and Vendr reports auto renewal is common. Check the notice period in your order form.

Do both work with Claude and ChatGPT?
Yes. Both run official MCP servers. ZoomInfo’s needs a ZoomInfo or GTM.ai account, and both spend your normal credits.
