Gusto vs ADP: Which Payroll Service Fits Your Small Business? (2026)

Gusto publishes its prices and needs no contract; RUN Powered by ADP is quoted and bundles 24/7 support, while ADP Workforce Now takes over past 50 employees.

Pick Gusto if you are a small US business that wants to see the price before you talk to anyone: $49 a month plus $6 per person on Simple, $80 plus $12 on Plus, and $180 plus $22 on Premium, month to month with free setup. Pick RUN Powered by ADP if you want 24/7 phone support, multi state payroll on its entry package and ADP’s tax filing behind you, and you are happy to get a quote. ADP publishes no package prices for RUN, and it often runs free months offers for new clients, so ask what is live when you get a quote. Once you pass about 50 employees, the ADP product to compare is ADP Workforce Now, not RUN.

Prices and features checked on each vendor’s own site on 21 October 2026. Neither vendor paid for or reviewed this article.

What is the difference between Gusto and ADP?

Both run US payroll, file payroll taxes, pay contractors and offer benefits. The difference is how you buy them and how much help comes with the software.

Gusto is self serve payroll and HR for small US companies. Its pricing page shows three plans with a monthly base fee plus a per person charge, no contract, and free account setup. Most add ons are priced on the same page, and Gusto says more than 500,000 businesses use it.

ADP sells two different products to the businesses most people mean when they type “gusto vs adp”. RUN Powered by ADP is its small business payroll, aimed at 1 to 49 employees, in four packages: Essential, Enhanced, Complete and HR Pro. ADP Workforce Now is its platform for 50 or more employees. Every package on both shows a “Get pricing” button rather than a price, so ADP is a quoted buy.

How do Gusto and RUN Powered by ADP compare side by side?

This table uses each vendor’s own pricing and package pages. RUN is the ADP product that matches Gusto on company size.

How much do Gusto and ADP cost in 2026?

Gusto shows every plan price. ADP shows none for RUN or Workforce Now. Its small business payroll page says cost depends on pay frequency, headcount and services, and that a per payroll processing fee is most common. Here is everything the two vendors publish.

The RUN package contents come from ADP’s package comparison. Third party review sites print estimates for RUN, but ADP does not confirm them, so we leave them out. Get a written quote.

Is Gusto cheaper than ADP for 10 employees?

We cannot say for certain, because ADP does not publish a RUN price. What we can say is what Gusto costs. This is a Work Insiders calculation from Gusto’s published prices, before add ons, insurance premiums and taxes. The ADP column stays “quoted” because ADP publishes no figure.

People paidGusto Simple per yearGusto Plus per yearGusto Premium per yearRUN Powered by ADP

10$1,308$2,400$4,800Quoted
25$2,388$4,560$8,760Quoted
49$4,116$8,016$15,096Quoted

For 10 people, Gusto Simple is $109 a month and Plus is $200 a month. If your team works in more than one state, compare RUN against Gusto Plus, because Simple covers one state and RUN Essential already includes multi jurisdiction payroll. Ask ADP to quote your real pay frequency, since a weekly payroll means more payroll runs than a biweekly one.

What does each one charge on top of the plan?

Gusto lists its extras openly. Next day pay on Simple is $15 a month plus $3 per person, same day pay is $90 per payroll, and instant pay is $100 per payroll, with same day and instant included on Premium. Remote I9 checks are $20 each, Business Compliance is $85 a month per state on an annual contract, and state tax registration varies by state.

ADP lists its extras without prices. On every RUN package, time and attendance, retirement, workers’ compensation and health insurance are add ons. The package page also notes that W2 and 1099 forms come with an additional fee. Ask for each of these as a separate line on your quote.

Does ADP require a contract, and how long does setup take?

Gusto has no long term contract, and you can switch plans or cancel anytime. Setup is free and you can create an account online without a sales call.

ADP does not publish RUN contract terms, so ask for them in writing. What it does publish is the fine print on its free months offer, which changes from time to time. The version live when we checked gave new RUN clients with 1 to 49 employees up to 6 free months if they signed and started payroll by a set deadline, paid fees by direct debit, and processed for three consecutive months on the same bundle. The free months land on months 4, 5, 6, 13, 14 and 15. Clients who self onboard on Essential get only three free months. Off cycle fees, delivery fees and non payroll services are excluded.

ADP describes RUN setup as a guided process with ADP experts helping you configure payroll, then a check before your first run. It does not publish a setup time. Workforce Now is a bigger project; ADP says it uses AI assisted implementation, and the timeline is set in your sales process.

Which is better for a small business, Gusto or ADP?

Gusto, if you want a known price, no contract and a do it yourself setup. You can model your full annual cost from its pricing page today, and you can leave any month.

RUN Powered by ADP, if support and multi state coverage matter more than a public rate card. Every RUN package includes 24/7 payroll support, payroll by computer, phone or app, multi state payroll and background checks. ADP’s package page also says that if it makes a tax filing error, it pays the resulting penalties. ADP says more than 900,000 small businesses use RUN.

Which is better for a recruiting firm or small staffing agency?

For a recruiting firm paying its own internal team plus some 1099 recruiters, both work. Gusto pays US contractors on every plan, and Plus adds contractor invoice upload. RUN pays employees and contractors and files 1099s, and its Enhanced package adds job costing to track labor by project or client.

For a staffing agency paying temps every week, neither is built for pay and bill. They do not tie each placement’s pay rate to a client bill rate, timesheet and invoice the way staffing back office tools such as TempWorks or Aqore do. If you mainly manage a large pool of independent contractors, ADP also sells WorkMarket by ADP for onboarding, paying and filing 1099s for them.

Which should you use once you grow past 50 employees?

On the ADP side, the answer changes product. ADP’s own RUN vs Workforce Now comparison guide says RUN fits 1 to 49 employees and Workforce Now fits 50 and up, with tiered pricing for RUN and custom pricing for Workforce Now.

ADP Workforce Now comes in three packages. Select covers payroll and HR, Plus adds benefits administration, and Premium adds time and attendance. ADP also includes compensation benchmarking built on pay data from more than 39 million workers. That is a midsize HR suite, closer to Paylocity or Paycom than to Gusto.

Gusto has no separate midsize product. You stay on the same plans and the per person charge grows with headcount. At 49 people, Gusto Premium is $15,096 a year on published prices. If you are also weighing an HR, IT and payroll platform at that size, see our Rippling vs Gusto comparison.

Which one has better benefits and HR support?

Gusto’s benefits page says it offers over 9,000 health plans from 30+ carriers, with a licensed advisor and no broker fees. When Gusto is your broker, you pay only premiums. Keeping your own broker costs $6 a month per eligible employee. HSAs are $2.50 a month per participant and FSAs and commuter accounts $4, under one $200 yearly service charge.

ADP sells health insurance, retirement plans and workers’ compensation as RUN add ons through its own insurance agency and retirement services, priced by quote. For HR help, Complete and HR Pro include an HR HelpDesk with phone and email access to HR professionals. HR Pro adds prepaid legal help from Upnetic Legal Services. ADP also runs a PEO, ADP TotalSource, if you want a co employer for benefits.

Do Gusto and ADP have an API or MCP server?

Gusto has both. Its MCP documentation describes an official server at mcp.api.gusto.com that connects your own Gusto account to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Cursor, with 72 tools for payroll, employees, contractors and reports. It went live in August 2025 and needs a full admin login. Gusto’s integrations directory lists 153 apps.

ADP’s developer site says its APIs vary by product, including RUN and Workforce Now, and that clients get access by buying ADP API Central. The API Central listing for Workforce Now includes “access to ADP APIs and MCP servers”, billed monthly by employee count, with consulting at $250 an hour. We found no MCP server documented for RUN. RUN connects to QuickBooks, Xero and Wave through its general ledger export, and to apps in the ADP Marketplace.

Who should choose Gusto?

  • Small US businesses that want a published price and no contract.
  • Recruiting firms paying an internal team plus some 1099 recruiters.
  • Owners who want health insurance through a broker with no admin fee.
  • Teams that want to query payroll from an AI assistant through MCP.
  • Teams paying occasional overseas freelancers.

Who should choose ADP?

  • Small businesses that want 24/7 phone support on the entry package (RUN).
  • Teams paying people in several states that want that on the base package (RUN).
  • Owners who want an HR help desk and legal help bundled in (RUN Complete or HR Pro).
  • Companies with 50 or more employees that want payroll, benefits and time in one suite (Workforce Now).
  • Businesses with large 1099 contractor pools (WorkMarket by ADP).

How should you trial Gusto and ADP before you switch?

Neither offers a free trial of payroll in the usual sense. Gusto lets you create an account online and set it up free before your first payroll. ADP offers a self led interactive demo of RUN, and its free months are a discount on a signed order, not a trial.

Price the same scope on both: your headcount, your states, your pay frequency, your contractors and the benefits you want. Ask ADP for a written quote that lists the package, the per payroll fee, W2 and 1099 fees, each add on, the contract length and the price after the free months end. Then compare it to the Gusto plan that matches, using the table above.

Switch at a quarter end if you can, so year to date tax filings stay clean. Have your year to date payroll registers, tax IDs and state unemployment account numbers ready, because both vendors need them to set you up.
