Pick Paycom if you want payroll that employees check and approve themselves before it runs, one database for every HR tool, and an AI assistant included at no extra charge. Pick Paylocity if you want stronger recruiting (AI candidate matching, text to apply, one way video and Grayscale’s high volume automation), a social hub for deskless staff, and a marketplace of 400+ integrations. Neither vendor publishes a price. Both build a custom quote from your headcount and the modules you choose, so get two written quotes for the same scope before you decide.
Prices and features checked on each vendor’s own site on 21 October 2026. Neither vendor paid for or reviewed this article.
What is the difference between Paycom and Paylocity?
Both are US human capital management suites that run payroll, time, benefits, recruiting and HR in one system, sold by quote. The difference is how they are built and what they lead with.
Paycom leads with automation on a single database it built itself. Its investor site says it launched in 1998 as one of the first web based HR and payroll companies. Its signature feature is Beti, a payroll that starts itself each period and asks employees to fix errors before payday. Paycom reported total revenue of $531.2 million for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 in its Q2 2026 results.
Paylocity leads with breadth and employee experience. It now sells HR, finance and IT tools on one platform, and adds employee engagement features such as Community, recognition and surveys. Its investor site says it was founded in 1997 and has been public since 2014. Paylocity reported fiscal 2026 total revenue of $1.771 billion in its fiscal 2026 results, with its client base up roughly 7%.

How much do Paycom and Paylocity cost in 2026?
Both are quoted. Neither site shows a per employee rate, a base fee or a plan grid with prices. Here is what each one does publish about how the price is built.
| Pricing fact | Paycom | Paylocity |
|---|---|---|
| Per employee price | Not published | Not published |
| What drives the quote | Workforce size and the tools you select | Headcount and the modules you choose |

The Paycom details come from its pricing page, which lists dozens of tools across payroll, talent acquisition, time, talent management and HR. The Paylocity details come from its pricing page and the promotion note on its payroll page.
Is Paycom more expensive than Paylocity?
There is no public number to compare, so only quotes can answer that. What you can control is scope: ask Paycom which tools sit in Core, and ask Paylocity which demo features are add ons, such as Recruiting or Learning.
Does either one charge extra for employee check previews?
The two vendors disagree. Paylocity’s comparison page says check previews are included with Paylocity and “Paid” with Paycom. Paycom’s pricing page describes Beti as part of its payroll tools. Both claims come from sales pages, so ask each vendor to confirm in writing what is included in your quote.
Which one has more accurate payroll and better employee self service?
This is where Paycom is most distinct. Its Beti page says payroll starts itself on the first day of each pay period, pulling hours, expenses, time off, deductions and pay changes. Employees get alerts in the Paycom app about missing punches or other issues, then preview, fix and approve their own check before payroll is submitted. Employees cannot change their own pay rate. Paycom cites a Forrester study it commissioned that found 90% less labor to process payroll. That is a vendor funded study of a composite customer, not an independent audit.
Paylocity takes a more traditional, admin led approach. Its payroll page describes a Payroll Readiness Dashboard that highlights tasks before processing day, 40+ audits that flag errors such as unexpected pay spikes, and hours that flow in from time and labor. Employees use self service to see pay, request time off, submit timecards and enroll in benefits.
Read Paycom’s comparison page with care. It says “Paylocity only lets employees preview their paychecks,” with no way to fix mistakes before payday. That is a competitor’s claim, dated December 2025, and Paylocity has added payroll AI agents since then.
Do employees prefer Paycom or Paylocity?
There is no neutral head to head data, only vendor claims. Paycom says its app has over 1,000,000 five star ratings across Capterra, the App Store and Google Play. Paylocity’s pricing page shows 4.4 out of 5 from 6,242 reviews as of 28 August 2026. Paylocity’s extra pull for employees is Community, a social hub with a company feed, groups, chat, file sharing and peer recognition. Paycom’s pull is that employees control their own data and paycheck in one login.
Which has better recruiting and ATS features?
For hiring teams, Paylocity has moved further in 2026. Its recruiting page lists AI written job descriptions, one click posting to 20,000+ job boards, text to apply and QR code campaigns, AI candidate matching, resume summaries, one way video interviews, assessments, background checks and offer management with market pay data. In April 2026 Paylocity acquired Grayscale, an AI recruiting automation company built for high volume hiring.
Paycom’s applicant tracking is solid and tightly joined to payroll. It posts jobs to your career site and to Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Simply Hired and Resume.com, parses resumes into a profile, sends interview invites and knockout messages automatically, and lets candidates text recruiters. Hiring managers can review and score applicants in the mobile app. When you hire, the applicant record becomes the employee record with no rekeying, and background checks and onboarding start from there.
Can either one replace a dedicated ATS?
For an employer hiring its own staff, often yes, especially hourly teams. For a staffing agency or a recruiting firm that places candidates with clients, no. Neither tool manages client job orders, submittals or pay and bill. Those teams need staffing back office software, such as TempWorks, for temp payroll and a staffing ATS for placements.
Which has better AI features?
Paycom’s IWant is a command driven assistant. Users type or speak a request, and it searches employee profiles, applicant data, company policies and dashboards inside Paycom. Managers can approve punch changes and time off from the same screen. Paycom says IWant is included for all users at no extra cost, and that its data never leaves Paycom’s closed system.
Paylocity launched Ignite AI in July 2026. It includes an Answer and Insight Agent for natural language questions on company data, a Payroll Analysis Agent that flags anomalies before submission, a Candidate Fit Agent and a Resume Summary Agent for recruiters, plus agents for data gaps and time corrections. An Ignite AI Hub lets leaders turn agents on or off and track adoption. Paylocity does not publish what, if anything, the agents cost.
Which mobile app is better?
Paycom’s self service page says its mobile app has all the functionality of the desktop version, and its comparison page claims support for over 100 employee tasks. Managers switch between self service and Manager on the Go without a second login. Paycom’s comparison page also says Paylocity limits managers to basic tasks on mobile. That claim is Paycom’s alone.
Paylocity’s self service page shows employees clocking in, requesting time off, enrolling in benefits, taking training and chatting in Community from their phones. For deskless teams without company email, Community chat is a real plus.
How long does implementation take, and what are the contract terms?
Neither vendor publishes an implementation timeline or a standard contract length. Paycom says you get a dedicated team for implementation and your first payroll, and that the one time implementation fee is included in your quote. Paylocity says it gives timely, customized implementation and continued service after go live, and its payroll page lists a “fast path to first payroll” for companies under 100 staff.
Ask both for the contract term, renewal notice period, renewal price cap and termination fee, and get the answers in the order form.
Is Paycom or Paylocity better for a 100 person company?
Both sell to that size. Paylocity places 100 to 499 employees in its midsize tier, and Paycom sells to employers of most sizes. At 100 people, choose by what hurts most today. If payroll corrections and missing punches eat your week, Paycom’s Beti targets that directly. If hiring, engagement and connecting other tools matter more, Paylocity offers more there.

| High volume hourly hiring | Paylocity | Text to apply, AI matching, Grayscale automation |
| Many deskless or multi site staff | Paylocity | Community feed, chat and groups on mobile |
| Want fewer vendors and no integrations | Paycom | Every tool is built in house on one database |
| Need to connect many other tools | Paylocity | 400+ prebuilt integrations and open APIs |

How do you get comparable quotes from Paycom and Paylocity?
Both start with a meeting request. Send each vendor the same written scope before the demo: headcount by state, pay frequency, hourly versus salaried split, number of hires a year, benefits setup, time clocks, and any staff outside the US.
Then ask for an itemized quote listing every module, the billing unit, the implementation fee, year end charges, AI costs and renewal terms. Ask Paycom what moves you from Core to Complete, and ask Paylocity which demo features are add ons. Compare the quotes line by line before you negotiate.
Quick answers
Does Paycom or Paylocity publish pricing?
No. Both build a custom quote from your headcount and the modules you choose. Paycom says every client starts on its Core package and that a one time implementation fee is included in the quote.
What is Paycom Beti?
Beti is Paycom’s employee driven payroll. It starts payroll automatically each period, alerts employees to issues, and lets them fix and approve their own check before payroll is submitted. It is available in the US, Mexico, Canada, the UK and Ireland.
Does Paylocity have an applicant tracking system?
Yes. Paylocity says its recruiting software is an ATS, with posting to 20,000+ job boards, text to apply, AI candidate matching, one way video and offer management. It added Grayscale’s AI recruiting automation in April 2026.
Is Paycom’s AI free?
Paycom says IWant is included for all clients and users at no extra charge, with no token limits. Paylocity does not publish pricing for its Ignite AI agents, so ask during the quote.
Which is better for small businesses?
Paylocity has a dedicated small business tier for 1 to 99 employees and a current free payroll month promotion for eligible new clients. Very small teams that want a published price may do better with a self serve payroll tool from our payroll category.
Which connects to more tools?
Paylocity lists 400+ prebuilt integrations and open APIs. Paycom’s position is that its single database means no third party integrations are required, though our Paycom listing notes it has a public API.
Which is better for a staffing agency?
For your internal team, either works. For weekly temp payroll tied to client billing and job orders, use staffing back office software instead of either one.
