Quick answer: The most used programming languages in 2026 are Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java and SQL. Python leads the TIOBE Index and the PYPL index, JavaScript is still the language most developers use day to day, and TypeScript became the most used language on GitHub in August 2025.
What changed since last year: AI is reshaping the list. Typed languages like TypeScript are winning because AI coding tools work better with them, Python’s growth accelerated sharply, and C climbed back to number two on TIOBE.
Who this is for: developers choosing what to learn next, hiring managers planning a tech stack, and recruiters who need to know which language skills are common and which are scarce.

How did we rank the most used programming languages?
No single source measures “most used” perfectly, so we combined four public datasets that each measure something different. Each one is linked so you can check the numbers yourself.
| Source | What it measures | Latest edition |
|---|---|---|
| Stack Overflow survey | Share of 31,771 developers who did extensive work in each language | 2025 (2026 results not yet published) |
| GitHub Octoverse | Monthly contributors committing code in each language | 2025 |
| TIOBE Index | Search engine hits for skilled engineers, courses and vendors | September 2026 |
| PYPL index | Google searches for language tutorials | October 2026 |
We gave the most weight to what developers actually write code in (Stack Overflow and GitHub), then used TIOBE and PYPL to break ties. Markup and shell languages like HTML, CSS and Bash were left out because they are rarely hired for on their own.
What are the top 15 most used programming languages in 2026?

Stack Overflow figures are the share of all survey respondents. TIOBE and PYPL figures were checked on October 3, 2026, and both indexes update monthly.
Why is Python the most popular programming language?
Python is number one on TIOBE with a 17.76% rating and number one on PYPL, where it takes a far larger share of tutorial searches than any other language. Stack Overflow found Python use jumped 7 percentage points in a single year after a decade of steady growth, and linked it to AI, data science and back end work.
On GitHub, Python had 2.6 million monthly contributors in 2025, up 48% in a year, and it is the main language inside AI projects. If you are building or training AI models, cleaning data or automating a workflow, Python is the default choice.
Is Python losing popularity in 2026?
Its TIOBE rating fell 8.22 points over the past year, but it is still well ahead of second place. TIOBE measures search results, not code written, and Python grew on both GitHub and Stack Overflow over the same period.
Is JavaScript still the most used language?
By headcount, yes. 66% of developers in the 2025 Stack Overflow survey used JavaScript, more than any other programming language, and W3Techs reports that 98.9% of websites use it in the browser. With Node.js it also runs servers, so one language covers the whole web stack.
What changed is where new JavaScript code gets written. GitHub found its growth slowing as developers moved to TypeScript, and IEEE Spectrum’s ranking dropped JavaScript from third to sixth in 2025.
Why did TypeScript become number one on GitHub?
TypeScript is JavaScript with types added, which lets tools catch mistakes before code runs. In August 2025 it overtook both Python and JavaScript to become the most used language on GitHub, adding over 1 million contributors in a year, a 66% jump.
GitHub gives two reasons. Nearly every major front end framework now starts new projects in TypeScript by default, and AI coding assistants produce more reliable code in typed languages. Its low TIOBE rank most likely reflects how TIOBE counts search results, since much TypeScript content is labelled JavaScript.
Is Java still worth learning in 2026?
Yes. Java is fourth on TIOBE and second on PYPL, and GitHub reports it added over 100,000 contributors in 2025. Banks, insurers, retailers and government agencies run large Java systems that will need maintaining for decades, and Java remains a core language for Android alongside Kotlin.
Does SQL count as a programming language?
SQL is a query language rather than a general purpose one, but it belongs on any list of what developers actually use. 58.6% of Stack Overflow respondents used it, second only to JavaScript, and IEEE Spectrum calls SQL expertise “an incredibly valuable skill” in its jobs ranking. PostgreSQL was the database developers most wanted to use for the third year running.
Which languages run enterprise and systems software?
Four languages do most of the heavy lifting behind the scenes.
- C# is fifth on TIOBE and powers Microsoft .NET business software, Azure services and games built in Unity. GitHub counted over 100,000 new C# contributors in 2025.
- C++ is third on TIOBE and runs game engines, trading systems, browsers and robotics, anywhere speed matters most.
- C climbed to second on TIOBE this year. It sits inside operating systems, firmware, medical devices and almost every embedded chip.
- Go is the language of cloud infrastructure. Docker and Kubernetes are written in it, and 16.4% of developers use it.
Is PHP dead in 2026?
No. PHP still runs 69.8% of websites whose server language is known, largely because WordPress powers 40.2% of all websites. Laravel keeps it popular for new projects, and 18.9% of developers still use it. It is less fashionable than it was, but there is steady work for PHP developers.
Why do developers love Rust?
Rust was the most admired language in the Stack Overflow survey yet again, with 72% of its users wanting to keep using it. It gives C level speed while preventing the memory bugs behind many security flaws. It entered the TIOBE top 10 this year, up from eighteenth, and 14.8% of developers now use it.
Which languages are best for mobile apps?
Kotlin is Google’s preferred language for Android, which went Kotlin first in 2019, and 10.8% of developers use it. Swift is Apple’s language for iPhone, iPad and Mac apps. It is used by 5.4% of developers and moved up seven places on TIOBE to eighteenth. Cross platform teams also use Dart with Flutter, though Dart has fallen to 41st on TIOBE.
Are R and Ruby still used?
R is ninth on TIOBE and fourth on PYPL. Only 4.9% of developers use it, but it dominates statistics, academic research, pharma and biotech, where analysts rather than software engineers do the coding.
Ruby dropped out of the TIOBE top 20 this year, but Ruby on Rails still runs large commercial platforms and plenty of startups, and 6.4% of developers use it.
How is AI changing which languages people use?
The 2025 Stack Overflow survey found 84% of developers use or plan to use AI tools, up from 76% the year before. GitHub says 80% of new developers on its platform use Copilot in their first week.
That shift helps a few languages most. AI tools write better code in languages with lots of training data and clear types, which favours Python, TypeScript, Java and C#. IEEE Spectrum also warns that it makes popularity harder to measure: questions posted on Stack Exchange in 2025 were just 22% of the 2024 level, as developers ask AI chatbots instead.
AI has not removed the need to understand code. 46% of developers said they do not trust the accuracy of AI output, and 45% said debugging AI generated code takes too long.
Which programming language should you learn first?
| Your goal | Start with | Add next |
|---|---|---|
| AI and machine learning | Python | SQL |
| Data analysis | SQL | Python or R |
| Websites and web apps | JavaScript | TypeScript |
| Corporate back end jobs | Java or C# | SQL |
| Cloud and DevOps | Python | Go |
| Android apps | Kotlin | Java |
| iPhone apps | Swift | JavaScript |
| Games | C# | C++ |
| Embedded and systems | C | Rust or C++ |
If you have no specific goal yet, Python is the safest first language. It is the easiest of the top languages to read, it leads both popularity indexes, and it is the main language for AI work.
How much do programmers earn in 2026?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for software developers at $135,980 as of May 2025. Web developers earned a median of $92,650 and computer programmers earned $100,390.
Pay depends far more on role, seniority and location than on language. Specialist skills that few developers have, such as Rust, Go and AI engineering, tend to command a premium because supply is thin, but no government source publishes salaries by language.
What does this mean for recruiters hiring developers?
Popularity tells you how deep the talent pool is. Python, JavaScript and Java roles draw large applicant pools, so the work is in screening. Rust, Go and Kotlin roles have far fewer candidates, so the work is in sourcing.
- Search for both names. A strong JavaScript developer may list only TypeScript, and the reverse. Put both in an OR group.
- Treat C, C++ and C# as different skills. They share a letter, not a job.
- Look where the code lives. GitHub profiles show the languages a developer actually commits in. Our X ray search guide covers how to search them.
- Consider remote hiring for scarce skills. See our reasons to hire remotely.

Quick answers
What is the most used programming language in the world?
It depends on how you count. JavaScript is used by the most developers, Python leads the TIOBE and PYPL indexes, and TypeScript has the most monthly contributors on GitHub.
What is the fastest growing programming language?
Among the big languages, TypeScript grew fastest on GitHub at 66% in a year, followed by Python at 48%. On TIOBE, Rust made the largest jump in the top 10.
Which programming language pays the most?
No official source tracks pay by language. In practice, rare skills in demand such as Rust, Go and AI engineering pay the most, while role and seniority matter more than the language itself.
Is it still worth learning to code with AI tools around?
Yes. Most developers now use AI tools, but nearly half do not trust the output, so people who can read, test and fix code remain in demand.
Why does TIOBE rank TypeScript so low?
TIOBE counts search engine results for the language name, and much TypeScript content is likely labelled JavaScript. GitHub’s contributor counts are a better measure of how much TypeScript is actually written.
How many programming languages are there?
Hundreds. TIOBE tracks the top 100 each month, but fewer than 20 are used by more than 5% of developers in the Stack Overflow survey.
The bottom line
Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java and SQL are the languages most of the world’s code is written in, and AI is pushing developers further toward Python and typed languages like TypeScript. Learn one of the top five first, then add a second language that fits your goal. If you hire developers, use these rankings to judge how hard a role will be to fill before you start sourcing.
