Quick answer
An AI interview is a screening interview run by software instead of a person. An AI agent asks you questions by voice, video or chat, follows up on your answers, records and transcribes the session, scores it against a rubric, and sends the result to a recruiter who decides what happens next. micro1 (its interviewer is called Zara) and Mercor use AI interviews as the main gate for their expert contract roles, and hundreds of employers now buy AI interviewers such as Alex, Ribbon, HeyMilo and Tenzo for first round screens.
Key takeaways
- An AI interview is usually a first round screen of 15 to 40 minutes, not a final decision; a human recruiter or hiring manager normally reviews the output.
- Mercor says most of its AI interviews take about 20 minutes, you can retake each one up to three times, and a free practice interview does not count against you (Mercor help center).
- micro1 describes Zara as an on demand conversational interview with open ended technical and scenario questions, plus a coding or data exercise for some roles (micro1 interview guide).
- Only 30% of candidates in a 2025 Gartner survey said they were open to AI led interviews, and just 31% were told in advance (Gartner).
- Candidates have legal rights in some places: Illinois requires notice and consent for AI analysis of video interviews, and New York City requires bias audits and advance notice.
- Honest preparation works best: know your own resume deeply, answer without long pauses, and practice with the vendor’s own practice tools.
What is an AI interview, in plain terms?
An AI interview is a structured conversation where a large language model plays the interviewer. It reads the job requirements and often your resume, asks a question, listens to your answer, and decides on the spot whether to probe deeper or move on. When the session ends, the system produces a transcript, a recording, a score or pass flag, and a written summary for the recruiter.
The difference from an old style one way video interview is that the AI talks back. A one way video tool shows you a fixed question and records you; an AI interviewer adapts its follow up questions to what you just said, which is why candidates often describe it as being “grilled on my own resume.”
AI interviews are spreading fast. In an October 2024 survey of 948 business leaders, 23% said their companies already used AI to conduct interviews (Resume Builder survey).
How does the micro1 AI interview with Zara work?
micro1 runs every candidate through an interview with Zara, its AI recruiter. You take it on demand from your dashboard, and micro1 says no two candidates get the same questions because Zara adapts to your chosen skill and background (micro1 question examples).
What does Zara ask?
micro1 lists open ended technical questions for your chosen role, scenario questions about how you think and communicate, a coding challenge for technical roles, and a human data exercise for annotator roles. Its published examples range from system design trade offs for developers to stakeholder management stories for account executives, plus common soft skill prompts such as “Describe a time you disagreed with a team member.”
How long is the micro1 interview?
micro1’s own research paper on Zara describes a 20 to 40 minute AI led interview whose questions branch in real time, preceded by an optional mock interview (Zara research paper). Reddit posters report a wide spread, from about 22 minutes to invitations quoting more than 50 minutes, so block out an hour.
How is it scored and can you retake it?
According to the same paper, Zara produces a structured skills report that combines a technical score with a CEFR style soft skills rubric, and recruiters see the scores, transcript, video and feedback. micro1’s guide says you get a real time result on whether you meet its certification criteria and can request feedback if you do not. We could not find a published micro1 retake policy; candidates on Reddit describe receiving an email offering a retake after 30 days, while others were told they cannot reapply for the same role after missing the bar. Treat retakes as possible, not guaranteed.
How does the Mercor AI interview work?
Mercor’s AI interviewer asks role specific questions, creates a transcript, and evaluates your performance for the listing. Mercor says most interviews take about 20 minutes, and each unique interview only needs to be done once because the result carries across applications that need the same interview (Mercor help center).
How many times can you retake the Mercor interview?
Mercor allows up to three retakes of an interview across all applications that use it, reset from the Assessments tab. If you use all three and hit a technical failure, you can email support with a screenshot to ask for a one time extra attempt, which is not guaranteed (Mercor application steps).
What does Mercor require on the day?
Mercor recommends the latest Chrome on a computer (Firefox and mobile browsers are not supported), a working camera and microphone, your full face visible, a quiet room, and pen and paper. Some interviews need full screen sharing or a whiteboard. Long silences can make the AI jump in, and you can tell it you were not finished.
Can you get a human interviewer or your transcript instead?
No. Mercor says the AI interview is its standard and only screening method, and it does not share recordings or transcripts with candidates. It also says interview data is not used to train AI models and that decisions usually take 2 to 4 weeks.
What do people on Reddit say about micro1 and Mercor AI interviews?
The most common Reddit questions are “Are micro1 AI interviews legit, or just data scraping?”, “How do I retake the Mercor interview?” and “Any recommendations for the AI interview?” The threads in r/recruitinghell, r/micro1_ai and r/mercor_ai show a split between people who got contract work and people who found the experience frustrating.
- Interruptions and pace: several candidates say the AI cut them off or moved on before they finished a thought, especially in a second language.
- Technical glitches: some describe the interviewer freezing after the greeting or the screen refreshing mid answer.
- Resume depth: Mercor posters say the domain interview digs into specifics from your own CV, so it mainly catches people who exaggerate their experience.
- Filler words: a frequent tip is to start answering quickly with real content rather than long “um” pauses.
- Data worries: some posters worry their answers are used as AI training data; read each company’s privacy policy before you start.
Which AI interviewers do employers and recruiters actually buy?
micro1 and Mercor run their own interviewers for their own talent pools. Most other AI interviews you meet come from vendors that employers license and plug into their applicant tracking system. Our AI interviewing directory compares dozens of them; the table below covers the names candidates and recruiters ask about most.
| Name | Who uses it | Format | What it scores |
|---|---|---|---|
| micro1 (Zara) | micro1, for its expert and AI training talent pool | Video, on demand, with coding or data tasks for some roles | Technical skill plus a soft skills rubric; pass or fail against certification criteria |
| Mercor | Mercor, for expert contract listings | Video with camera, sometimes screen share or whiteboard | Role specific answers, transcript based evaluation |
| Corporate TA teams and agencies | Phone, video or text | Standardized rubric scores, fraud and proctoring flags | |
| TA teams screening at volume | Voice and video | First round fit, written back to the ATS | |
| Staffing agencies, BPOs, franchises | Voice, video, SMS or form | Fit score with reasoning, cheat detection signals | |
| Agencies and employers on large ATSs | Phone, video, WhatsApp, email | Scorecard against requirements, 40 plus fraud signals | |
| High volume hourly employers | Chat and text | Qualification screening and scheduling | |
| Large enterprises | Structured video interviews and assessments | Structured interview and assessment results | |
| Large volume employers | Text chat on your phone | Competencies from structured written answers | |
| Classet (Joy) | Frontline and hourly employers | Phone call | Structured answers and dealbreaker flags |
Formats and scoring come from each vendor’s own site in September 2026. Paradox is now part of Workday, which completed the acquisition on October 1, 2025.
What do AI interviewers cost recruiters?
Most vendors are quote based. Two publish prices: Ribbon lists Growth at $499 a month billed annually with 100 interviews and $4 per extra interview (Ribbon pricing), and Classet lists a Starter plan at $249 a month billed annually or $349 month to month with 50 completed interviews (Classet site). We checked both pages in September 2026; confirm current terms on the vendor site before you buy. For the wider category, see our best AI recruiting tools and AI recruiting agents guides.
What are my rights as a candidate in an AI interview?
In Illinois, the AI Video Interview Act says an employer that uses AI to analyze recorded video interviews for Illinois based roles must tell you beforehand, explain how the AI works and what characteristics it evaluates, and get your consent. Employers may share the videos only with people needed to evaluate you, and must delete them within 30 days if you ask.
Illinois also amended its Human Rights Act through HB 3773, effective January 1, 2026, requiring employers to give notice when AI influences employment decisions and banning discriminatory AI use, including zip codes as proxies. The state withdrew its proposed implementing rules in June 2026, but the statutory duties remain in force (Seyfarth summary).
In New York City, Local Law 144 bars employers and agencies from using an automated employment decision tool unless it had a bias audit within the past year, the audit summary is public, and candidates got notice. City guidance says that notice must come 10 business days before use, and you can file a complaint with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection if those steps were skipped.
Outside those rules, you can still ask the employer for an accommodation or an alternative format. Some vendors, such as Tenzo, say candidates can opt out of AI interviews and request accommodations, but whether you get one depends on the employer.
How do I prepare for an AI interview honestly?
The best preparation is the same as for a strong human screen, adjusted for a listener that does not read body language well and does not like silence. Use the table as a checklist before you click start.
| Stage | What to expect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Before you start | A browser check for camera, microphone and sometimes screen share | Use a computer with the latest Chrome, headphones, a quiet room and stable internet |
| Practice | Free practice sessions on many platforms | Take Mercor’s practice interview or micro1’s Interview Prep tool; neither counts against you |
| Resume questions | Deep follow ups on projects, tools and results you listed | Review your last two or three roles for an hour; be ready with numbers and specifics |
| Behavioral questions | Scenario prompts about conflict, uncertainty and communication | Use a short situation, action, result structure and stop when you have answered |
| Technical tasks | Coding, whiteboard or data labeling exercises for some roles | Have pen, paper and a calculator ready; think aloud so the transcript shows your reasoning |
| During the interview | The AI may interrupt after a pause | Start answering quickly; ask it to repeat or clarify; say “I was not finished” if needed |
| Integrity checks | Proctoring, eye tracking and AI answer detection | Look at the camera, keep other apps closed, and follow the platform’s AI use policy |
| After the interview | Results in minutes (micro1) or 2 to 4 weeks (Mercor) | Request feedback where offered and use retakes only once you have improved |
Practicing AI interview questions out loud with a timer is the single most useful drill, because the main failure Reddit users describe is rambling or freezing. If you are a software engineer, our guide to AI assisted technical interviews covers the coding side in more depth.
Should I use an AI tool to answer during the interview?
No. Mercor’s policy allows grammar checks but bans using language models to compose answers, and vendors like Alex, HeyMilo and Tenzo sell proctoring and fraud detection precisely to catch it. Gartner found 6% of candidates admitted to interview fraud in a 2025 survey (Gartner fraud survey), so employers are watching closely. We cover the tools and the risks in our piece on real time interview assistants.
Should recruiters use AI interviews for first round screens?
AI interviews make the most sense for high volume roles where you cannot speak to every applicant, such as hourly, contact center, staffing and contract expert hiring. They make less sense for executive search or small specialist roles where the first call is also a sales call for the job. Our interviewing tools directory includes human led options too.
The trust gap is real: Gartner found only 26% of candidates trust AI to evaluate them fairly (Gartner trust survey). Tell candidates upfront, explain what is scored, offer an alternative for accommodations, and keep a human on every rejection decision.
Frequently asked questions about AI interviews
Is an AI interview a real interview?
Yes. It is usually a first round screen, and the score and transcript go to a human recruiter or project team who decide whether you move on.
How long does the micro1 AI interview take?
micro1’s research paper describes a 20 to 40 minute interview, but candidates report a range, so allow about an hour including setup.
Can you retake the Mercor AI interview?
Yes. Mercor allows up to three retakes per interview across all applications, and support may grant one more only for documented technical problems.
Who is Alex the AI interviewer?
Alex is an AI recruiter, formerly called Apriora, that employers use to run phone, video and text first round interviews. It says it has interviewed 1,000,000 candidates (Alex site).
Can I practice for an AI interview for free?
Yes. Mercor offers a free practice interview that does not affect your applications, and micro1 offers an Interview Prep tool before the real interview.
Can an employer use AI to reject me without telling me?
In Illinois and New York City, employers must give notice before using AI in these ways, and Illinois also requires consent for AI analysis of video interviews. Elsewhere, rules vary, so ask the employer directly.
Do AI interviewers record and keep my video?
Usually yes. Mercor keeps recordings and transcripts to evaluate you, and Illinois law lets you ask an employer to delete AI analyzed interview videos within 30 days.
